1. Separated elbow or dropped section

The most common failure. The upper elbow pulls out of the gutter outlet or the lower section drops when a strap screw backs out of dry fascia or stucco. Water then exits at the gap, usually 8-10 feet up the wall, and streaks the siding on its way to the ground. Fix: re-seat the elbow, replace the strap with a new fastener into solid backing, and add a screw at the joint. Minor repair tier. Safe to DIY on a single-story home if the ladder is footed properly.

2. Crushed or kinked at the bottom

Lawn mowers, trash cans, trailer hitches, and kids' bikes flatten the lower two feet of aluminum downspouts. A crushed section restricts flow, and the outlet backs up until the gutter above overflows during the first hard rain. Fix: cut out and replace the damaged section and the lower elbow. Standard repair tier. Adding a short splash block or extension at the same time protects the new section.

3. Leaking seam or elbow joint

A drip at a joint during rain is usually an elbow installed upside down (the seam faces the flow instead of nesting inside the next piece) or debris packed at the elbow holding water against it. Fix: clear the elbow, re-orient the pieces so each upper section sits inside the lower one, and seal only if the metal is sound. Minor tier. 4. Rusted or corroded through

Galvanized steel downspouts on homes from the 1950s through 1980s rust from the inside out where wet debris sits in the lower elbow. Once you can push a screwdriver through it, sealant is a waste of money. Fix: replace the drop in aluminum, which does not rust, and match the profile of the rest of the system. Standard tier. 5. Disconnected extension or underground drain

The downspout is fine, but the extension is missing, the splash block has walked away, or the underground drain it feeds is crushed or silted shut. Water then pools at the base of the wall. A 40-foot gutter run with one 2x3 downspout at the far end will overflow in an atmospheric river no matter how clean it is.
