What is a Seamless Gutter?

Seamless gutters are fabricated using a portable roll-forming machine loaded onto a truck.
Full Definition
Seamless gutters are fabricated using a portable roll-forming machine loaded onto a truck. The contractor feeds a flat coil of aluminum (or steel or copper) through the machine on your property, and it outputs a continuous gutter section cut to the exact length of each run. Because there are no mid-run seams, the only potential leak points are at inside corners, outside corners, and end caps — all of which are sealed with gutter sealant and miters, rather than the factory lap-joints found in sectional gutter sections.
The material most commonly used is 0.027-inch or 0.032-inch aluminum, which resists corrosion and accepts paint well. Seamless gutters can be formed in K-style or half-round profiles and are available in dozens of factory colors. The weight and rigidity of a single-piece run also means the gutter is less likely to pull away from the fascia at the seam points that commonly fail on sectional systems.
In Sacramento, virtually all professionally installed replacement gutters are seamless. Sectional gutters — the kind sold in 10-foot lengths at hardware stores — are used almost exclusively for DIY repairs. When evaluating quotes, ask whether the contractor is forming on-site (true seamless) or pre-cutting sections at a shop.

Related Terms
K-Style Gutter
The most common residential gutter profile in the US, with a flat back, decorative ogee-shaped front face, and rectangular cross-section that holds more water per linear foot than half-round gutters of equivalent size.
Half-Round Gutter
A semi-circular gutter profile commonly used on historic, Craftsman, and Tudor-style homes that offers a cleaner aesthetic and easier cleaning than K-style, at the cost of lower water capacity per equivalent width.
Fascia Board
The vertical trim board running along the edge of the roof where the gutter is mounted. Usually wood, sometimes aluminum-wrapped. Rotted fascia must often be replaced before a new gutter installation can proceed.
Hidden Gutter Hanger
A modern gutter mounting bracket that fastens through the gutter into the fascia from inside the gutter trough, leaving no visible hardware on the gutter face — stronger and cleaner-looking than the spike-and-ferrule method it has largely replaced.
Gutter Apron
A piece of metal flashing installed under the roof shingles and over the back edge of the gutter that directs water into the gutter rather than behind it, preventing fascia rot.
