The fastener is entirely hidden inside the gutter, with no exposed nail head or screw on the visible front face of the gutter. The hanger spans the full gutter width, maintaining the profile shape while distributing load across the gutter walls and into the fascia.
The structural superiority over spike-and-ferrule mounting is significant. A spike driven through the gutter front into the fascia relies entirely on the spike's shear strength and the wood's holding power in that single penetration point. Over time, the spike loosens as the wood seasons and the gutter cycles through thermal expansion and contraction. Hidden hangers use longer screws into more wood fiber and the bracket design distributes stress along the gutter wall rather than concentrating it at a spike hole.
