What is a Downspout?
The vertical pipe that carries water from the gutter trough to the ground or drainage system, sized to match the volume capacity of the gutter run it serves. A downspout's job is to evacuate collected water from the gutter fast enough that the trough never overflows.
Full Definition
A downspout's job is to evacuate collected water from the gutter fast enough that the trough never overflows. Standard residential downspouts are 2x3 inch or 3x4 inch rectangular sections (or 3-inch round on half-round gutter systems). The general rule of thumb is one downspout per 20–30 linear feet of gutter for a 5-inch K-style, with 3x4 outlets required when the drainage area exceeds roughly 600 square feet of roof per downspout.
In Sacramento, downspout placement matters as much as sizing. The Sacramento Valley's clay-heavy soils drain poorly, and concentrated downspout discharge at the foundation is one of the leading causes of foundation movement in older homes. Best practice is to extend downspout discharge at least 6 feet from the foundation — either with a surface extension, an underground pop-up emitter system, or a French drain connection.
Downspout components include the outlet (where the gutter feeds into the downspout), elbows to offset around eaves and soffits, straight sections, and a terminal elbow directing water away from the foundation. All connections are riveted or screwed and sealed to prevent leaks at joints.

Downspout Extension
An add-on at the bottom of a downspout that carries roof runoff 4–10 or more feet away from the foundation — a critical foundation protection measure in Sacramento's clay-soil conditions.
Gutter Elbow
An angled fitting — typically 45° or 90° — used to redirect a downspout around an eave, soffit, or wall obstacle, or to angle the terminal end away from the building foundation.
Splash Block
A small concrete or plastic pad placed under a downspout outlet to disperse water flow and prevent soil erosion and foundation undermining at the discharge point.
Rain Chain
A decorative alternative to an enclosed downspout, using a vertical series of linked cups or rings to guide water from the gutter to the ground or a collection basin.
K-Style Gutter
The most common residential gutter profile in the US, with a flat back, decorative ogee-shaped front face, and rectangular cross-section that holds more water per linear foot than half-round gutters of equivalent size.
